TMJ/TMD Therapy

TMD TREATMENT:

Our approach to TMD therapy is non-invasive, starting with a mandibular bite splint worn full time to provide the patient relief of their TMD symptoms.

The majority of our TMD patients report a 70-90% improvement of their symptoms within the first 2-3 months after the initial splint is placed; no matter how long they have had a TMJ problem.

Dr. Bowbeer is a contributing editor for the orthodontic journal "The Functional Orthodontist" and has written 14 articles on this subject over the past 20 years. The two most recent articles discusses  "early" orthopedic development of the jaws in pre-teen children, and proper effective treatment of patients with TMD.

The orthopedic development of upper and lower dental arch width and increased vertical dimension frequently has a beneficial effect for patients with TMJ dysfunction problems. Many TMJ dysfunction problems are related to condyles being posteriorly and superiorly displaced by the “trapped” mandible (due to the arch constriction and deep overbite).
